Started with Edward Tufte master of information & Ggraphic Designer. I had read one of his famous book "The Visual Display ofQuantative Information" and no doubt that he can explain and pick a really good example in visual and graphic design. (Alex had it in my lab so you are welcome to check it out, I think)

But this week Sensei talked about Envisioning Information [Escape form Flatland] and there are a lot of good explaination in this book such as

1. Micro/Marcro

2. Layer/Separate

3.Small multiple

4.Colour & Information

Then We ask to do a short workshop to think about our alarm clock from ARCHITECH like thinking (Structural thinking) break things down to element then start from each elements.

One example is IA or information architechture like in webpage they have structure to communicate to people where to go around in website just like in the building have door that we know we can get in, room that we able to do different things or sign to signal the way...

PS. I found that mind map is one of the best way to write thing down and be able to understand or recall it later because mind map works similar to our brain's nature. Our brain like thing in picture form not alphabet also our brain likes colour, colour can means a lot to our brain and our memorize

Designing the experience

["Experience" if you think about experience there will be many things you can design.]
Mr. Yamazaki Sensei

Experience in this week I think it's something more like human feeling in recieved some thing thought his/her 5 senses and result in the 6th sense, means what you see, hear, smell, touch, taste will become your feeling as and end result.
But experience not happen just now and gone but it's something memolized, it's has feeling from before attached to it always and from this we can see some example Yamazaki Sensei gave us in lecture like

Chikoka Island - where all path of the museum has been design and the time(11.00-13.00-15.00) of walking thought this experience as well

Design the 3rd place - Starbucks trying to make emotion attachment with the consumers by offering music as only place can created and have.

In the last time we learned about what I called "form&colour" and "Human" approaches. This time we learned more about the HUMAN side...

Maybe the most tought design approach not many designer can acheive this level because it's need time to learn to be themself it's the process of DESIGN DESIGNER THEMSELF

2. Find out logic by considering good example
Easy way to start and fast way to learn about good design form many goods example around us, applied it, learn it, and develop our own way of design at the same time
Design / Nature / Articial / Program / -Language- / rules / words

3.Engineer - logical / Numbers / Mathematic
Kasei Engineering something measuable and judge by number or stat

After this week I realized something form Sensei's slides that there are not only design method we learn to today but tons more of Method because and if we want to develop our own we can try NEW METHOD and learn with it.

Summary of Design Approach

This week we had a little bit of hand on experience in order to get a deeper understand on what design approach we can use when we are designing things. The first one is we asked to draw a vase that we think it's beautiful (Form, Color, Texture, Material etc.) then what situatiion and surrounding this vase would be ((what)Usage, where would it be, How we can enjoy it, when we will use it). This perfectly explain silently in your mind that what comes first when you started to design - For example the first excirse when you close your eyes you could see the picture of the vase right away (form, color, material, etc.). Then the second one, when you actually close your eyes more senses has been stimulated. I means we could be able to imagine about some music, some smell, the weather outside, touch of the flower and so on with almost every part of a body can feel it. Included the mind(Feeling) also, you can tell the emotion that weather happy or sad.

Bottom line " I think this is something sinificant that when you take a slicely different design approach, it result in such huge end result not only end product but experience thought the design process of designer themselfe also".

Information Design - Paul Rand (1st)

"Information Design"

Since I missed the first lecture, so I read about Paul Rand from the internet and other's blogs. So I'm sorry if this might be a little different from what Mr. Yamazaki Sensei lectured in the class, please correct me it i'm wrong.

Paul Rand most widely known contributions to design are his coperate identities , many of which are still in use. IBM, ABC, UPS, and the now-infamous Ernon, among many others, owe Rand their graphical heritage.One of his primary strengths, as Moholy-Nagy pointed out, was his ability as a salesman to explain the needs his identities would address for the corporation

Rand’s defining corporate identity was his IBM logo in 1956, which as Mark Favermann notes “was not just an identity but a basic design philosophy that permeated corporate consciousness and public awareness." The logo was modified by Rand in 1960, and the striped logo in 1972. The stripes were introduced as a half-toning technique to make the IBM mark slightly less heavy. Two variations of the "striped" logo were chosen (one with thicker lines, one with thinner lines), the mark with thicker lines has become the company's default mark. Rand also designed packaging, marketing materials and assorted communications for IBM from the early 1970s until the early 1990s, including the well known Eye-Bee-M poster. Ford appointed Rand in the 1960s to redesign their corporate logo, but afterwards chose not to use his modernized design

Although his logos may be interpreted as simplistic, Rand was quick to point out in A Designer’s Art that “ideas do not need to be esoteric to be original or exciting." His American Broadcasting Company trademark, created in 1962, epitomizes that ideal of minimalism while proving Rand’s point that a logo “cannot survive unless it is designed with the utmost simplicity and restraint.” Rand remained vital as he aged, continuing to produce important corporate identities into the eighties and nineties with a rumoured $100,000 price per single solution. The most notable of his later works was his collaboration with Steve Job for the NeXT COMPUTER corporate identity; Rand’s simple black box breaks the company name into two lines, producing a visual harmony that endeared the logogram to Jobs. Steve Jobs was pleased: just prior to Rand’s death in 1996, his former client labelled him, simply, “the greatest living graphic designer.”
